Standard ensuite size in Australia

The minimum and comfortable ensuite dimensions, built up from a 900mm hobless shower and a vanity beside it, plus what changes when you add a double vanity.

An ensuite is the smallest room in the house that has to work every day. It is a shower, a vanity and a toilet, and the sizes come straight from those three.

The numbers

Minimum width1,500mm
Minimum floor area3.0m²
Comfortable width1,800mm
Comfortable floor area5.4m²
Maximum proportions3:1 before it reads as a corridor
Wet areaYes: waterproofing requirements apply

Where the minimum comes from: a 900×900 hobless shower against one wall plus a 460-deep vanity beside it.

These are the figures Draftie's layout review measures your plan against, generated from the same table the checker uses, so this guide and the tool cannot disagree. Minimums are the point below which a room stops working, not a legal floor: outside ceiling heights, ventilation, sanitary facilities and egress, the NCC does not mandate most room dimensions.

The build-up

The minimum is a 900 × 900mm hobless shower against one wall with a 460mm-deep vanity beside it. That is where the minimum width comes from. The 900mm shower figure is not invented: it is what the Livable Housing Design Standard requires.

From there:

Hobless showers changed the arithmetic

A hobless (level-entry) shower is now the norm rather than a premium item, and it is what the Livable Housing standard is written around. It removes the step, which is what makes the 900 × 900 figure usable, and it puts more demand on the waterproofing and the floor fall: a detailing question rather than a dimensional one, but one your builder will price.

Where the space actually goes

Ensuites are usually carved out of the main bedroom, which means every millimetre you give the ensuite comes off the bedroom. Before committing:

The one to avoid

A long thin ensuite (1,500mm wide and 4,000mm deep, with everything in a row) hits its area target and is miserable to use, because you shuffle sideways past the vanity to reach the toilet. The aspect cap in the table above is what flags this.

Checking your own plan

Draw the room, put the furniture in it, and see what is left. Draftie flags every room that falls under the figures above and tells you the shortfall in millimetres, so you find out on the drawing rather than after a builder prices it.

FAQ

What is the minimum ensuite size in Australia?

About 1,500mm wide and 3m², which is a 900 × 900mm hobless shower against one wall with a 460mm-deep vanity beside it. 1,800mm wide and about 5.4m² is comfortable.

How wide does an ensuite need to be for a double vanity?

About 2,100mm or more. A double vanity is typically 1,200–1,500mm wide, and it needs to sit clear of the shower and leave room to stand in front of it.

Does an ensuite need a window?

It needs ventilation, which can be a window or mechanical extraction under the NCC. A window is nicer and helps the room dry, but on an internal ensuite an exhaust fan ducted to outside is the normal solution.

Check these numbers against your own plan

Draw your layout in Draftie and every room reports its real dimensions as you move a wall, so a room that is 200mm too narrow shows up before a builder finds it.
