Walk-in robe size: how big does a WIR need to be?
Hanging depth is 600mm and an aisle is 900mm, which sets every walk-in robe dimension, including when a walk-in is genuinely worse than a wall of built-ins.
A walk-in robe is hanging space plus an aisle to stand in. Two numbers set everything: 600mm of hanging depth, and 900mm of aisle.
The numbers
| Minimum width | 1,500mm |
| Minimum floor area | 3.0m² |
| Comfortable width | 1,800mm |
| Comfortable floor area | 4.0m² |
| Maximum proportions | 4:1 before it reads as a corridor |
Where the minimum comes from: 600 hanging depth plus a 900 aisle; double-sided wants 2100.

These are the figures Draftie's layout review measures your plan against, generated from the same table the checker uses, so this guide and the tool cannot disagree. Minimums are the point below which a room stops working, not a legal floor: outside ceiling heights, ventilation, sanitary facilities and egress, the NCC does not mandate most room dimensions.
The arithmetic
- Hanging depth: 600mm. A shirt on a hanger is about 550mm across the shoulders; 600mm is the working figure.
- Aisle: 900mm. Enough to stand, turn and reach into the hanging.
From those:
| Configuration | Width needed |
|---|---|
| Single-sided (hanging on one wall) | 1,500mm (600 + 900) |
| Single-sided, comfortable | 1,800mm |
| Double-sided (hanging both walls) | 2,100mm (600 + 900 + 600) |
| Double-sided, comfortable | 2,400mm |
| U-shaped (three walls) | 2,400mm+ across, 2,400mm+ deep |
Length determines how much you store. Allow roughly 1,200mm of hanging rail per person for everyday clothes, more if you keep coats and suits.
When a walk-in is worse than a built-in
This is the trade nobody makes explicitly.
A 1,500mm single-sided walk-in gives you 600mm of hanging along its length. A 600mm-deep built-in robe across the same wall gives you the same hanging, and gives the 900mm aisle back to the bedroom, because you stand in the bedroom to use it.
So a small walk-in costs you 900mm × its length of floor area to gain the feeling of a walk-in robe. On a tight plan, a wall of well-fitted built-ins beats a cramped walk-in on both storage and usable space.
A walk-in earns its floor area when it is double-sided at 2,100mm+, because then the aisle is serving two runs of hanging instead of one.
Fitting it out
- Double hanging (two rails, one above the other) doubles capacity for shirts and folded-length items: most of a wardrobe.
- Long hanging for dresses and coats needs about 1,600mm of height, so one section only.
- Shelves at the top for the things you use twice a year.
- Drawers for what would otherwise need a dresser in the bedroom, which is floor area recovered.
- Light. A windowless walk-in needs a light you do not have to hunt for; put it on a sensor.
Where it goes
Between the bedroom and the ensuite, so one short passage serves both and the bedroom stays a clean rectangle. Not through the ensuite: steam and clothes are a poor combination, and it means crossing a wet floor to get dressed.
Checking your own plan
Draw the room, put the furniture in it, and see what is left. Draftie flags every room that falls under the figures above and tells you the shortfall in millimetres, so you find out on the drawing rather than after a builder prices it.

FAQ
What is the minimum walk-in robe size?
About 1,500mm wide (600mm of hanging depth plus a 900mm aisle) and around 3m². Double-sided hanging needs 2,100mm, which is where a walk-in starts to earn its floor area.
Is a walk-in robe better than a built-in?
Not always. A narrow single-sided walk-in gives the same hanging as a 600mm built-in on the same wall while consuming an extra 900mm of aisle. Walk-ins win when they are double-sided, because then the aisle serves two runs.
How much hanging space does one person need?
About 1,200mm of rail for everyday clothes, and more if you keep coats and suits. Double hanging (two rails one above the other) roughly doubles the capacity of a given length.

Check these numbers against your own plan
Draw your layout in Draftie and every room reports its real dimensions as you move a wall, so a room that is 200mm too narrow shows up before a builder finds it.
