Standard bathroom size in Australia
How big a family bathroom needs to be, why 1,800mm is the floor, and the fixture arithmetic that decides whether a bath, a shower and a vanity all fit.
A family bathroom is a bath, a shower, a vanity and a toilet arranged so two of them can be used at once. The dimensions follow from the fixtures.
The numbers
| Minimum width | 1,800mm |
| Minimum floor area | 3.5m² |
| Comfortable width | 2,400mm |
| Comfortable floor area | 7.2m² |
| Maximum proportions | 3:1 before it reads as a corridor |
| Wet area | Yes: waterproofing requirements apply |
Where the minimum comes from: a 1700 bath spans the short wall; the AU standard family bathroom is 2.4 × 3.0.

These are the figures Draftie's layout review measures your plan against, generated from the same table the checker uses, so this guide and the tool cannot disagree. Minimums are the point below which a room stops working, not a legal floor: outside ceiling heights, ventilation, sanitary facilities and egress, the NCC does not mandate most room dimensions.
The fixtures that set the size
| Fixture | Typical size |
|---|---|
| Bath | 1,700 × 750mm |
| Shower | 900 × 900mm minimum, 1,200 × 900mm comfortable |
| Vanity | 900 × 460mm single, 1,200–1,500mm double |
| Toilet | 700mm deep, needs clear space forward of the pan |
The 1,700mm bath is why 1,800mm is the minimum room width: a standard bath spans the short wall, and there is nowhere else for it to go in a small bathroom.
The three-fixture problem
A bathroom under about 2,400 × 3,000mm makes you choose. The usual resolutions, in order of how well they work:
- Shower over bath. Recovers the whole shower footprint. Unfashionable, entirely practical, and standard in Australian houses for decades.
- Drop the bath. Fine in an ensuite or a second bathroom, a resale question in the only bathroom of a family house.
- Move the toilet out. A separate WC beside the bathroom is very common in Australian plans and lets two people use the facilities at once. It costs a door and a bit of circulation.
Waterproofing and the door
A bathroom is a wet area, which brings NCC waterproofing requirements for floors, walls and junctions. That does not change your dimensions, but it changes the cost per square metre, which is a reason not to make the room bigger than it needs to be.
The door matters more than people expect. It cannot swing into the arc of another door, it should not swing onto the toilet, and in a small bathroom it eats floor you have already allocated. A cavity slider solves it and needs the wall length to disappear into.
Where it goes in the plan
Group the bathroom with the ensuite and the laundry if you can. Wet areas share plumbing, and the cost of scattering them across a plan is real, not just pipework, but slab penetrations, vents and hot water runs. It is one of the cheapest wins in a layout and one of the most common things amateur plans get wrong.
Checking your own plan
Draw the room, put the furniture in it, and see what is left. Draftie flags every room that falls under the figures above and tells you the shortfall in millimetres, so you find out on the drawing rather than after a builder prices it.

FAQ
What is a standard bathroom size in Australia?
About 2,400 × 3,000mm, or roughly 7.2m², is the common family bathroom and fits a bath, a separate shower and a vanity. The practical minimum is 1,800mm wide and about 3.5m², which forces a compromise on one of the fixtures.
What is the minimum size for a bathroom with a bath and a shower?
Around 2,400 × 2,700mm if the shower is separate. Below that, put the shower over the bath or move the toilet to its own compartment: a 1,700mm bath plus a 900mm shower plus a vanity needs more wall than a small bathroom has.
Should the toilet be in the bathroom or separate?
A separate WC is common in Australian plans and lets two people use the facilities at once, which matters in a family house with one bathroom. It costs a door, a bit of circulation and about 1.7m².

Check these numbers against your own plan
Draw your layout in Draftie and every room reports its real dimensions as you move a wall, so a room that is 200mm too narrow shows up before a builder finds it.
