Standard bedroom size in Australia
The minimum and comfortable bedroom dimensions for an Australian home, the bed-and-clearance arithmetic they come from, and the robe mistake that makes a compliant bedroom unusable.
A bedroom is a bed plus the space to walk around it and open things. Every number below comes from that, not from a regulation: Australia has no mandated minimum bedroom size in the NCC.
The numbers
| Minimum width | 2,700mm |
| Minimum floor area | 8.0m² |
| Comfortable width | 3,000mm |
| Comfortable floor area | 9.6m² |
| Maximum proportions | 2.2:1 before it reads as a corridor |
Where the minimum comes from: queen bed 1530 wide + 600 to pass on both sides = 2730; at the preferred 750 both sides, 3030.

These are the figures Draftie's layout review measures your plan against, generated from the same table the checker uses, so this guide and the tool cannot disagree. Minimums are the point below which a room stops working, not a legal floor: outside ceiling heights, ventilation, sanitary facilities and egress, the NCC does not mandate most room dimensions.
The bed decides everything
Australian mattress sizes, which are what the room is really dimensioned around:
| Bed | Width | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 920mm | 1,880mm |
| King single | 1,070mm | 2,030mm |
| Double | 1,380mm | 1,880mm |
| Queen | 1,530mm | 2,030mm |
| King | 1,830mm | 2,030mm |
A queen is the default assumption for a main bedroom and for any bedroom you might one day describe as a main bedroom. Take 1,530mm, add 600mm to pass on each side, and you have the minimum width. At a comfortable 750mm each side you get the ideal.
The robe mistake
This is the one that catches people, and it catches architects' drawings too.
Room width is measured wall to wall. A built-in robe is typically 600mm deep, and it eats that width for the full length of the wall it sits on. So a bedroom drawn at the 2,700mm minimum with a robe on a side wall has 2,100mm of usable width, and a queen bed at 1,530mm leaves 570mm total, split unevenly, with the robe doors opening into it.
If the robe is on a side wall, add its depth to the room width. If you can, put the robe on the wall behind the door or opposite the bed, where its depth costs you length you have rather than width you don't.
Length, which nobody checks
A queen is 2,030mm long. Add a bedside table's depth or the bed's own frame overhang and you are at about 2,200mm before you can walk past the foot of the bed. A bedroom that is generously wide and 2,600mm deep is a corridor with a bed in it.
The aspect cap in the table above exists for this reason: it stops a room hitting its area target by being long and thin.
Windows and the wall you lose
A bedroom needs a window for light and ventilation under the NCC, expressed as a proportion of floor area. That window normally wants the external wall, which is also the wall you would like the bed's head against, and often the wall the robe would have gone on. On a small bedroom, sketch the bed, the robe and the window together before you accept the dimensions; two of the three usually want the same wall.
Checking your own plan
Draw the room, put the furniture in it, and see what is left. Draftie flags every room that falls under the figures above and tells you the shortfall in millimetres, so you find out on the drawing rather than after a builder prices it.

FAQ
What is the minimum bedroom size in Australia?
There is no single mandated minimum in the NCC. In practice 2,700mm wide and about 8m² is the smallest that takes a queen bed with room to pass on both sides. Apartment design guides and some local planning schemes do set their own minimums, so check yours if you are not building a house.
How big should a main bedroom be?
About 3,000mm × 3,200mm, or 9.6m², is comfortable for a queen bed with bedside tables and room to walk past the foot of the bed. A main bedroom with a walk-in robe and ensuite wants more length again, since those are taken out of the same footprint.
Does a built-in robe count in the bedroom size?
It is inside the room, so it counts towards the floor area, but it consumes about 600mm of usable width or length. A 2,700mm bedroom with a robe on a side wall behaves like a 2,100mm one, which is too narrow for a queen bed.

Check these numbers against your own plan
Draw your layout in Draftie and every room reports its real dimensions as you move a wall, so a room that is 200mm too narrow shows up before a builder finds it.
