Standard dining room size in Australia

Table sizes by seat count, the 900mm chair clearance everyone cuts and regrets, and how much room a dining area actually needs at each size.

A dining room is a table plus the space to pull a chair out and walk behind it. The second part is the part that gets cut.

The numbers

Minimum width2,700mm
Minimum floor area9.0m²
Comfortable width3,200mm
Comfortable floor area11.5m²
Maximum proportions2.2:1 before it reads as a corridor

Where the minimum comes from: a 2000-deep table plus 900 to pull a chair out clear of it.

These are the figures Draftie's layout review measures your plan against, generated from the same table the checker uses, so this guide and the tool cannot disagree. Minimums are the point below which a room stops working, not a legal floor: outside ceiling heights, ventilation, sanitary facilities and egress, the NCC does not mandate most room dimensions.

Table sizes and what they need around them

SeatsTable sizeRoom size needed
4900 × 900mm2,700 × 2,700mm
61,800 × 900mm3,600 × 2,700mm
82,400 × 1,000mm4,200 × 2,800mm
103,000 × 1,100mm4,800 × 2,900mm
Round, 41,100mm diameter2,900 × 2,900mm
Round, 61,400mm diameter3,200 × 3,200mm

The room size in the right column is the table plus 900mm on every side you need to use. That 900mm is not generosity: 750mm gets the chair out from under the table, and the remaining 150mm is what lets someone walk behind a seated person without turning sideways.

Against a wall you can drop one side to 600mm, since nobody sits there and nobody walks past.

Per-person table width

Allow 600mm of table edge per seated person, and 300mm of depth each side. A 1,800mm table seats three along each long side, or six: trying to seat eight at it means everyone eats with their elbows in.

Where the dining area goes

Between the kitchen and the outdoor living area, because that is the traffic it actually generates: food comes from one and, in an Australian house, half the meals end up at the other.

If it is part of an open-plan space, the table is the piece of furniture most likely to end up in the circulation path, because it is the biggest and the most central. Plan the route around it, and remember that a chair pulled out occupies 900mm of the path.

Separate dining, honestly

A separate formal dining room is used a handful of times a year in most Australian houses. If you want one, it is your house, but the same floor area added to the living space, or a second living zone, is used every day. A "meals" area off the kitchen plus a large outdoor table covers most of what the formal room was for.

Checking your own plan

Draw the room, put the furniture in it, and see what is left. Draftie flags every room that falls under the figures above and tells you the shortfall in millimetres, so you find out on the drawing rather than after a builder prices it.

FAQ

How much space do you need around a dining table?

900mm on every side that is used: 750mm to pull the chair out and 150mm to walk past someone seated. Against a wall you can reduce it to about 600mm.

What size dining room do I need for 8 people?

About 4,200 × 2,800mm. That is a 2,400 × 1,000mm table with 900mm of clearance around the sides in use.

How much table width does each person need?

About 600mm of table edge per person. A 1,800mm table comfortably seats six: three along each long side.

Check these numbers against your own plan

Draw your layout in Draftie and every room reports its real dimensions as you move a wall, so a room that is 200mm too narrow shows up before a builder finds it.
